Chemical Transfer Pumps and their Uses

A chemical transfer pump is any type of pump that has been designed to safely move and distribute chemicals in a system according to their specific requirements, whether it is a centrifugal pump or a positive displacement pump. Chemical transfer pumps are not to be mistaken for pumps used for the process of cooling/heating chemicals, pumps used for the process of mixing chemicals or chemical process pumps, or any other procedure for that matter.

Even though water is technically a chemical, water transfer pumps do not come under the category of chemical transfer pumps. The main reason for this is that the workings and casings of a chemical transfer pump are generally built with extremely tough materials which can easily withstand long periods of corrosive and toxic exposure to hazardous elements.

Key Difference Between Dosing Pumps and Chemical Transfer Pumps

Chemical dosing pumps are specially designed to pump an exact amount of medicines or chemical substances into a gas, steam, or water flow at a controlled and consistent rate to give enough time for the medicine or chemical to react.

Chemical Transfer Pumps and their Uses

Dosing and chemical transfer pumps are used across a wide range of applications, not only in the chemistry industry. An example of this can be seen in swimming pools where these types of pumps are used to put in chlorine at sufficient levels. They are also used in power stations and boiler rooms to add chemicals at various different stages of the process, including basic activities like regulating the water pressure.

These kinds of pumps are also used in HVAC systems where they help add the liquids required for the cooling process such as Freon. Inhibitors can also be installed to protect the components and pipes against corrosion. In other situations, a biocide may be combined to end the development of bacteria in the cooling systems with lower temperatures.

Here are some other industries which use chemical transfer pumps:

Water treatment

Slurry processing

Sewage

Pulp and paper

Pharmaceuticals

Oil and gas

Nuclear

Mining

Food processing

Construction

Biofuels

Agriculture

Aerial spraying

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Chemical Transfer Pumps

Chemical transfer pumps are a great instrument that is used to handle and transfer dangerous chemicals in a wide range of industries. These pumps need to be handled very carefully to avoid any damage that can happen to any nearby system or staff working with the handling of the dangerous chemicals. As a direct result of this, these pumps usually come with a heftier price tag which is usually worth paying but this, unfortunately, makes them a bad choice for moving non-hazardous chemicals as it does not justify the hefty price tag.
